A Story of Success
Hudson, South Dakota is hardly the place that you would expect to find a wholesale distributor of Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE), but this is where Larson Sales, Inc., had its humble beginnings.
In 1981 Oscar and Lila Larson took on the challenge of being the exclusive distributor of the revolutionary Dixon Mowers for South Dakota and part of eastern Wyoming. From a dealer network of 7 dealers, and 3 Dixon mower models, they set out to show the world how mowing could be “fun”! Donn & Linda Larson purchased the business in 1996 from Oscar and Lila Larson. As time went on the dealer base increased and the territory got larger and the mower models grew more numerous.
These humble beginnings placed the business on their farm 7 miles NW of Hudson. The machinery shed doubled as a warehouse for the mowers and accessories. The basement of their house provided the setting for the parts department. The kitchen table was the office.
With over 25 years of experience in the zero turn industry, Larson Sales has seen many changes. One of the biggest changes is the influx of other manufacturers into the zero turn industry.
“It is interesting to see the competition finally figure out the zero turn mowers are a huge advantage in time savings for the customer”, says Donn Larson, President and CEO of Larson Sales, Inc. He continues, “It is entertaining to watch the industry try to reinvent itself by doing things that we did years ago and that we found not to work. Been there, done that, didn’t work. So we moved on to what did work and that is why we are where we are today and why we have been so successful.”
The small town, friendly, family style atmosphere is the trademark of Larson Sales, Inc., and that style is a big reason that this venture has been successful.
